10-088 - 300,000 Volt Hand Driven Van De Graaff Static Electricity Generator
van de Graaff generator

This hand-cranked Van de Graaff with 300 kV potential, including instructions and accessories, is essentially a turn-key operation. Set it on your lab table, invite a volunteer to start cranking, and then demonstrate the static electricity produced. The globe is highly polished and seamless stainless steel 10" in diameter, and the instruction booklet describes a host of experiments as well as explaining in detail how it works.

Several accessories are also included:

  • 40 cm (16") discharge wand with plastic handle
  • Electric whirl
  • Electric plume
  • Point discharge needle

Due to the size and weight, extra shipping may need to be calculated after checkout.

VDG4K - 400,000 Volt Van De Graaff Static Electricity Generator

Similar to VDG5K, below, but less expensive.

  • Up to a spectacular 400,000 volt potential
  • 320mm diameter stainless steel collector
  • 3" diameter shock-resistant transparent butyrate column
  • On/off switch with grounding jack for available discharge wand
  • Square plastic base with black finish helps keep charge on the collector
  • Redesigned brush assembly rarely needs adjustment
  • Operable in humidities up to 90%
  • Spare belt included

Our standard model 400kV Van de Graaff generator will jump sparks, raise hair, light bulbs, and any number of experiments and demonstrations. Great way to study electrostatic principles. We suggest using our VDGWAND-TALL Discharge Wand for best results and maximum spark distance.

Using safe static electricity. Creates over 10 inch bolts of lightning. Yet harmless enough for those "hair raising" experiments.

  • Up to a spectacular 500,000 volt potential.
  • 440mm diameter stainless steel collector (0.7mm thick), highly polished with a mirror-like finish to maximize static potential.
  • Sparks over 10"
  • 3" diameter shock-resistant transparent butyrate column.
  • On/off switch with grounding jack for available discharge wand.
  • Square plastic base with black finish helps keep charge on the collector.
  • Redesigned brush assembly rarely needs adjustment.
  • Operable in humidities up to 90%
  • Spare belt included

Van De Graaff Grounding Wands
van de Graaff wand

Portable Wand.
This hand-held wand consists of a 10.5cm diameter highly polished stainless steel sphere mounted on a 40 cm insulated plastic rod. With banana plug and alligator clip to ground most Van de Graaffs. The discharge wand proves a convenient way to discharge the collectors of Van de Graaff generators. This is particularly useful when demonstrating hair-raising. By discharging the collector, the student does not feel a shock when touching the generator. The wand can also be used to draw arcs from the Van de Graaff which can be seen from a distance for an effective demonstration in front of large groups.

van de Graaff wand

Short Wand.
Bring the power of a lightning bolt into your classroom or museum. Here's an easy yet dramatic way to discharge Van de Graaff Generators in full view of the largest crowd. With the top aluminum oblate terminal about 7 inches in diameter and 5 inches high, mounted on a 12" stand to place alongside a Van de Graaff generator at different distances for different discharge sparks, it can also be picked up and used as a handheld wand.

van de Graaff wand

Tall Wand.
Same as the Short Wand but with a longer 24" stand.

LJAR - Leyden Jar
Is actually a high voltage capacitor used in the embryonic stage of the discovery of electricity

Charge it, dissect it - holds a charge for hours. Prove that a charge is stored in the dielectric insulator, not in the metal surfaces. Includes: 2 aluminum cans, polystyrene dielectric, electrode with ball terminal, instructions with lab activities. Wt: 9 oz.

ESCOPE - Electroscope
A way to measure very small electric charge. Another device ushering in the age of electricity.

Show how two similarly charged objects repel! This classic device features a molded plastic case with removable glass sides and a 10 cm square viewing area. Aluminum leaves hang from brass hooks for maximum sensitivity. Includes: 2 pair die-cut leaves; brass hanger; 2 glass panels, 10x 10cm; ball terminal; insulator; instructions. Wt: 10 oz.

BTCSPINNER-N124 - Static Spinner
Works with Van de Graaffs and our Tesla Coils
static spinner

Detect an invisible electric wind from a Van de Graaff with our static spinner. since pointed objects carry a much greater concentration of electric charges than the Van de Graaff's sphere, the spinner will rotate rapidly when in its vicinity. Consists of a metal base, 9" diameter spinner on cone bearings for easy movement, and instructions with theory.

615-3162 - Electric Plume
Demonstrates the forces repulsion by like charges quite dramatically
electric plume

Need a way to demonstrate electrostatic repulsion without a model? This "head of hair" makes a good substitute. Attach the suction cup on the base of the plume to the globe of the Van de Graaff generator. Turn on the machine and watch each strand of "hair" stand away from each other. The reason, of course, is that each strand has the same electric charge and repels its neighbor. With instructions.

A fun accessory for your Van de Graaff generator!

615-3190 - Wimshurst Machine, Deluxe
electric plume

Unlike many others we have tested, this one works really great!

This device generates static electric charge at higher current (and lower voltage) than the Van de Graaff. It consists of two high resistance plastic discs with equally spaced metal sections. The discs rotate in opposite directions with a hand crank, producing substantial opposite charges which are deposited in the capacitors and on the metal electrodes. You can collect induced charge with the brushes and adjust the electrodes and Leyden Jar capacitors for higher potential. Fully assembled, mounted on plastic base, works right out of the box.
