The spectacular and highly visible effect produced by tesla coils has been the subject of controversy for years. The high frequency high voltage energy produced possesses qualities unlike conventional electricity. It defies most insulation material, transmits energy without wires, produces heat, light and noise yet harmlessly passes through human tissue with virtually no feeling or shocking effects. Much research, money and effort was dedicated to actual construction of similar large devices capable of producing 200 foot lightning bolts and illuminating light bulbs 25 miles away. Nikola Tesla was the originator of this research and initially was often thought of as a charlatan. As progress was made in the electrical sciences it was soon realized that he was indeed correct, and over his life was responsible for many advances in the development of energy production. He has now been credited with these advances and original techniques. His main theory, however, is still very much in question and many dedicated groups are hopeful in obtaining some break that will resurrect it. The tesla coil is the basis for this research and never ceases to amaze all those who come in contact with its highly visual and audible effects.

This is a spark driven Tesla coil generating highly visual and audible sparks into open air without a return contact.
The unit operates from a standard wall outlet requiring less than two amps. The transformer is current limited to 60 ma and center point grounded.
The tesla coil is easily tabletop operable and is a two-level assembly consisting of a top and bottom section. The top supports the vertical mounted secondary output coil and the flat Archimedean spiraled primary along with tunable clip lead. The bottom supports the transformer, capacitor and spark gap assembly. A metal control panel is connected to earth ground along with the secondary return minimizing any dangerous shock hazards.
The spark gap uses two pure tungsten electrodes rarely requiring cleaning or dressing. Hardware is all brass where required, with the primary coil being a hybrid between copper tubing and a heavy insulated wire.
The kit version contains all parts to complete the unit, including a pre-wound and fully prepped secondary coil, and an 8 x 2" toroidal terminal which greatly adds to the performance and overall appearance of the completed system.

Applications: Use for a science project, special effects prop, research of high frequency electricity, and much more. Some audiophiles claim that running the tesla coil's output through their component wires (unattached to their equipment, of course!) for about a minute helps to "open up" the sound quality of their equipment; whether this is a real or perceived effect is unknown, but this is some of the feedback we've gotten from our audiophile customers.

With twice the output power of the BTC40, this classic core & coil design throws long sparks of electricity into the air, and is still able to run from a standard wall outlet.
This is a larger and heavier Tesla coil than our BTC40 that requires 2 people to move, but is still small enough to be operated on a tabletop (although it will pretty much dominate the table).
A heavy piece of wire is connected to the front panel of the unit for grounding to a dedicated lead if necessary. A grounded strike ring prevents the long electrical arcs produced by this coil from arcing to some of the sensitive electronic parts and pieces. Bypass capacitors are placed across both the neutral in the hot AC line and connected to the third wire grounded lead.

Get Up and Close to One of Natures Most Spectacular Events!
Coil produces a Wall of Fiery Arcs and Sparks. The quality of the assembly can be used in a Museum or any other type of display. The design is very robust with a display quite spectacular for a coil of this size, and is able to be placed on a table for display (though 2 people will be needed to lift it).
The original unit was built for the New Hampshire Public Service Company. They wanted a display to show their linemen how lightning can travel along power lines, breakdown insulators, damage transformers, demonstrate the advantage of lightning rods on homes and a lot of other related issues. The display was also featured on several television networks. The display is still traveling around the country.
Power enough for most R&D experiments able to throw long sparks of electricity into the air, and runs from standard wall power (select 115V for USA or 220V for international use). The primary of the transformer is fully bypassed with heavy-duty polypropylene capacitors to prevent dangerous line surges from going back into your power system. The power cord is a 14 gauge three wire for heavy-duty use.
The spark gap is air-cooled with a high output muffin fan and uses three 2 x 3/8" pure tungsten electrodes that rarely requiring cleaning or dressing. The tungsten electrodes are easily adjusted to help vary the length of the output discharge. This can be used to increase or decrease the recommended running time of your coil. The output terminal is a 24” toroid. Overall size is 20"x20" base, and 48" tall. Hardware is all brass or nylon where required with the primary coil being all copper tubing.
Our coils use capacitors specially built and designed for Tesla coil applications. They are not the MMC type multiple capacitors that are cheaper yet do work quite well but not as reliable as the oil filled polypropylene capacitors designed for the high primary currents, reverse of voltages and other electrical phenomena that a Tesla coil capacitor must endure.
Our Transformers used in our designs do not require the complex protection circuits that other neon sign Transformers require. Our Transformers were specially built with internal protection against voltage transients and only require a simple resistor in each output when operating up to two units!

More robust and forgiving on failing parts than the solid state semiconductor designs
Excellent for Demonstrating Wireless Power Transmission
These spectacular display devices produce arcs and sparks quite unlike the damped spark gap driven Tesla coils. Operation does not require a noisy spark gap that produces copious amounts of RFI radio frequency interference, but operates efficiently at the quarter wave frequency of the secondary coil.
Vacuum tubes, while large and requiring filament power, do offer robust and forgiving operation and are intended as a good starter approach to solid state Tesla coils. This approach is far less temperamental than the solid state MOSFET or IGBT drivers. However once these devices are debugged and tweaked one can obtain some excellent results. Our lab FET coil generates over 6 foot sparks using only 3 kilowatts. (The fully assembled 1KW tesla coil sold here produces up to 18-24" sparks.)
The output of the oscillator is relatively closely coupled to the secondary coil designed for high Q performance and self resonant to the 1/4 wave of the oscillator frequency. The voltage distribution is now that of a quarter section with a current node at these base and voltage node at the top. Input power to the coil is raw unrectified AC at 3000 volts rms with a current of 0.5 amps. Peak voltage is over 4000 volts and is supplied by a conventional MOT transformer transformer being fed by a voltage adjustable variac for power output control.
(We also have built coils using 304TH, 450TH and parallel 2500TH's with a full 5000 watts of plate dissipation. This coil produced spectacular hot flaming arcs up to 8 feet with 8 kw input.)
A pulse signal is also shown that controls the grid of the tube allowing a wide range of spark texture variation by changing the duty cycle and ON/OFF.
For those building this from scratch, the circuit of the vacuum tube device is a high powered Hartley radio frequency oscillator tuned to the resonant frequency of the secondary coil. The circuit uses a medium powered 833A triode transmitting tube that inherently has a high grid to plate capacitance and is readily available. The plate section of the coil is wound with 1/4 inch copper tubing. The grid feed back coil is wound with #16 litz wire. The secondary is wound with #24 litz wire on a properly prepped plastic form.

Controllable Oscillation Allows Musical "Notes" to be Played Through The Tesla Coil's Electrical Discharge
This solid state tesla coil provides a spectacular display of lightning-like discharges for museums, attention-getting advertising, special events, and of course high-voltage high-frequency research. But the most fascinating feature is the ability to play music. By rapidly modulating the output frequency, "notes" can be played by the resonance of the electrical discharge, and when a keyboard is plugged in and passed through the proper controlling circuitry (both of which are included with this tesla coil), the tesla coil becomes a musical instrument that uses lightning bolts to make notes.
The solid state tesla coil is sold as a "minimal kit" requiring the purchaser to assemble the device in order to make it operable. Unlike the transformers used in standard core-and-coil designs, this advanced device poses a less-lethal electrical hazard -- which is one of the attractive features of solid state tesla coils.
It is suggested to not operate this solid state tesla coil in densly-populated environments, such as cities, for purposes of radio interference -- or if this device is to be operated in such an environment, it is suggested that a Faraday Cage be built to block the undamped electromagnetic emissions (plans on building a Faraday Cage are included with all versions of the solid state tesla coils). Also, operating this tesla coil inside a metal building, such as a steel garage, will help to reduce or eliminate RF emissions.

Solid-state Tesla coil using readily available television fly back transformers and operating from 12 volts DC (from either a battery or 115-vac wall adapter, not included). Versatile circuit can be used to make a Jacobs's ladder, plasma tornado, wireless energy demonstration, pyrotechnic electrical display and even turn a normal light bulb into a low-cost plasma globe.
