Gas Discharge Power Supplies Energy Probe |
Please read to fully understand the capabilities & advantages of our power sources for plasma, Nature's 4th state of matter! |
Plasma power supplies generate high voltages at high frequency, and are used for applications in the fields of plasma operations and research. These power supplies make possible everyday functions with plasma that otherwise would be almost impossible to perform. A conventional resistive load is where the electrodes are in direct electrical contact with the material, and power is supplied directly to the gas mixture or target material. This is very similar to a conventional neon tube where both ends are connected, and once the neon ignites it becomes a negative resistance that is practically void of any reactive elements. Operation then simply involves independent control of the voltage, current, and frequency. These power supplies are used for display devices such as Plasma globes, Jacob's ladders, Tesla coils and other popular special effects, museum displays and attention-getting advertising props. They can power ultrasonic transducers used for cleaning, welding and other functions. They make excellent drivers for high-voltage stacks such as Cockcroft Walton voltage multipliers, Marx generators, arc generators and similar devices, etc. A complex reactive load is where the electrodes are not in direct contact with the material, but instead the energy to the target material is applied capacitively by plates, cells, curved surfaces or other forms of indirect coupling. This can make it difficult getting the necessary energy into the target material. Tuning out the capacitance of the coupling elements eliminates much of these problems and allows maximum power into the target material. Without being able to tune out the capacitance it would take an insurmountable amount of high-voltage to obtain the same results, and in most cases would be next to impossible. Our plasma power supplies allow the user to eliminate this undesirable effect (this is mathematically explained in the Tech Data download). These power supplies are used for Dielectric Barrier Discharge devices (DBD's), closed Plasma Cells/Containers, and so on. Operation is made as simple as possible for all applications. When driving a pure resistive load such as for most applications simply involves independent adjustment of the voltage, independent adjustment of the current and frequency to obtain the desired effect. These can be used directly to power plasma and gas displays, creating spectacular eye catching, colorful events for show and entertainment, museums shows, point of purchase or simple neon signs displays. You will find animated, music controlled and many attention getting special effects. |
Output voltage is a 60 kHz high frequency current that is fully short circuit protected. The high frequency also makes possible low storage energy voltage multiplier stacks for high voltage dc sources as well as being an excellent plasma driver when used direct. Output current is fully adjustable via a control pot. Unit is excellent for powering neon and all types of gas filled vessels using one or two electrodes or can power objects simply by proximity. Allows total dimming without pulling of ends away from electrodes. Provides an even distribution of light along the entire display length down to where discharge appears as a wriggling worm at it's lowest setting...NEAT EFFECT. It easily retrofits to our voltage multipliers modules providing DC voltages up to 100 kv and currents of up to 0.3 milliampere. The current limiting and control feature make this combination an excellent choice for charging capacitors for low loss charging and 12 volt portable operation. Module is built on a rugged printed circuit board and is mounted in a plastic channel. Complete with input jack for mating to 2.1mm regulated DC wall adapter and high volt output lead with return ground if needed. |
These low-cost, high-voltage sources operate from a 12 volt battery for field use or a wall adapter converter for normal 115 vac use (the appropriate adapters are listed with each unit, if you require a power supply). Virtually indestructible circuitry is open and short circuit protected and will withstand reasonable amounts of EMP. Output is end point grounded and is at a high frequency of 25 to 35 khz. This higher frequency allows easy conversion to high voltage DC sources using voltage multiplier stacks. The direct high frequency output can be used to power plasma and gas discharge display tubes. All models include appropriate input and output leads for easy terminations.

High-powered front panel adjustable output plasma driver operates from 115 or 220 vac and is intended for larger plasma globes up to 48 inches diameter (about 33 cubic feet), or similar-volume plasma columns and large gas filled discharge vessels. (Above this volume, our PVM500 should be used.) Rectangular shaped unit is 2.75" x 4" x 10.25" deep and is built on an aluminum chassis with plastic cover. The front panel holds the fuse, power control adjustment, indicator lamp, and power input cord. The output end is open with a 12" 30kV high voltage wire and 4' grounding lead. Factory set open circuit voltage shutdown protects the transformer from too-light and no-load operation. Internal circuitry protects against short circuits. Open circuit voltage is 20kV pk-pk with a short circuit current of 25 ma load lines at 125 watts of output. The power adjust control varies the frequency from 20 to 60 kHz and controls output. Full load output line current is 1.5 amps. |
