Table Top Tesla Coil

Output spark is not dangerous as coil is earth grounded, but can produce a mild electric shock.

This is a spark driven Tesla coil generating highly visual and audible sparks into open air without a return contact.

The unit operates from a standard 3-wire 115vac wall outlet requiring less than two amps. The transformer is current limited to 60 ma and center point grounded. Caution as improper contact with the out put can produce a dangerous shock.

The tesla coil is easily tabletop operable and is a two-level assembly consisting of a top and bottom section. The top supports the vertical mounted secondary output coil and the flat Archimedean spiraled primary along with tunable clip lead. The bottom supports the transformer, capacitor and spark gap assembly. A metal control panel is connected to earth ground along with the secondary return minimizing any dangerous shock hazards.

The spark gap uses two pure tungsten electrodes rarely requiring cleaning or dressing. Hardware is all brass where required, with the primary coil being a hybrid between copper tubing and a heavy insulated wire.

The kit version contains all parts to complete the unit, including a pre-wound and fully prepped secondary coil, and an 8 x 2" toroidal terminal which greatly adds to the performance and overall appearance of the completed system.

Hazards: 115vac line powered, requiring caution in assembling and testing. The output of the transformer (not the coil) can give a very painful shock and burn but is not considered lethal as short circuit current is only 20 ma. The output spark from the Tesla coil secondary can be painlessly contacted by firmly holding a metal object and drawing the spark to it. The Tesla coil must not be operated in a flammable atmosphere or near sensitive electronic equipment.

Assembly: Mostly mechanical assembly with some soldering.

This is a spark driven Tesla coil generating very visual and audible sparks into open air without a return contact.

The unit operates from a standard 3-wire 115vac wall outlet requiring less than six amps. The circuit uses (4) 4 Kv 30 ma current limited transformers providing 8000 volts at 60 ma. This value is above the lethal value of 50 ma and we cannot stress the importance to use caution when testing and adjusting!

This Tesla coil can be operated on a tabletop. It is built as a two-level assembly consisting of a top and bottom section. The top supports the vertical mounted secondary output coil and the flat Archimedean spiraled primary along with a tunable clip lead. The bottom supports the transformers, capacitor and spark gap assembly attached by machine screws and nuts.

A metal control panel is connected to earth ground along with the secondary output coil return, reducing line voltage shock hazards. The spark gap is air cooled with a high output muffin fan and uses three pure tungsten electrodes rarely requiring cleaning or dressing. Hardware is all brass where required with the primary coil being all copper tubing.

The kit contains a pre-wound and fully prepared secondary coil and all parts to complete the unit, including a 12 x 3 inch toroidal terminal which greatly adds to the performance and overall appearance of the completed system.

High Power Vacuum Tube Tesla Coil

These spectacular display devices produce arcs and sparks quite unlike the damped spark gap driven Tesla coils. Operation does not require a noisy spark gap that produces copious amounts of RFI radio frequency interference, but operates efficiently at the quarter wave frequency of the secondary coil.

Vacuum tubes, while large and requiring filament power, do offer robust and forgiving operation and are intended as a good starter approach to solid state Tesla coils. This approach is far less temperamental than the solid state MOSFET or IGBT drivers. However once these devices are debugged and tweaked one can obtain some excellent results. Our lab FET coil generates over 6 foot sparks using only 3 kilowatts. (The fully assembled 1KW tesla coil sold here produces up to 18-24" sparks.)

The output of the oscillator is relatively closely coupled to the secondary coil designed for high Q performance and self resonant to the 1/4 wave of the oscillator frequency. The voltage distribution is now that of a quarter section with a current node at these base and voltage node at the top. Input power to the coil is raw unrectified AC at 3000 volts rms with a current of 0.5 amps. Peak voltage is over 4000 volts and is supplied by a conventional plate transformer being fed by a voltage adjustable variac for power output control.

(We also have built coils using 304TH, 450TH and parallel 2500TH's with a full 5000 watts of plate dissipation. This coil produced spectacular hot flaming arcs up to 8 feet with 8 kw input.)

A pulse signal is also shown that controls the grid of the tube allowing a wide range of spark texture variation by changing the duty cycle and frequency.

For those building this from scratch, the circuit of the vacuum tube device is a high powered Hartley radio frequency oscillator tuned to the resonant frequency of the secondary coil. The circuit uses a medium powered 833A triode transmitting tube that inherently has a high grid to plate capacitance and is readily available. The plate section of the coil is wound with 1/4 inch copper tubing. The grid feed back coil is wound with #16 litz wire. The secondary is wound with #24 litz wire on a properly prepped plastic form.

Easy to build Tesla coil produces up to a 50 mm point to point 40,000-volt spark discharges. Spark repetition rate is selectable between a heavy and slow or a fast and light discharge. Sparks are very audible and visual for the small size of this unit.

Solid-state Tesla coil using readily available television fly back transformers and operating from 12 volts DC (from either a battery or 115-vac wall adapter, not included). Versatile circuit can be used to make a Jacobs's ladder, plasma tornado, wireless energy demonstration, pyrotechnic electrical display and even turn a normal light bulb into a low-cost plasma globe.

Unit is built onto a plastic channel of 7.25 x 2.5 x 3" with a coil enclosure of 5 x 3.5" diameter. All controls are on an aluminum front panel and include a fuse, power switch and power control. Operation with light loads must be done with caution as open circuit voltage will soar at resonance and cause the output transformer to burn out. Tesla Coil

Unit is built into a 3 x 2 x 1" plastic box and is powered by a three wire grounded line cord operating from 110 vac. As a safety measure the output winding is directly connected to the earth grounded green lead of the power cord. This prevents any accidental contact to the 115 vac that could occur by accident or by a circuit fault.

Power and repetition rate are controlled by a combination potentiometer and switch. Output voltage pulses are up to 40 kv at .2 Joules and can be adjusted from a slow to fast pulse rate. Sparks are very audible and visual for the small size of this unit.

Hazards: 115-vac line powered, requiring caution in assembling and testing. Output will produce moderate electric shocks but is not dangerous if assembly is correctly followed.
