High Power Vacuum Tube Tesla CoilThese spectacular display devices produce arcs and sparks quite unlike the damped spark gap driven Tesla coils. Operation does not require a noisy spark gap that produces copious amounts of RFI radio frequency interference, but operates efficiently at the quarter wave frequency of the secondary coil.Vacuum tubes, while large and requiring filament power, do offer robust and forgiving operation and are intended as a good starter approach to solid state Tesla coils. This approach is far less temperamental than the solid state MOSFET or IGBT drivers. However once these devices are debugged and tweaked one can obtain some excellent results. Our lab FET coil generates over 6 foot sparks using only 3 kilowatts. (The fully assembled 1KW tesla coil sold below produces up to 18-24" sparks.) Output frequency tracks within 5% of the resonant point using one our proprietary circuits. The output of the oscillator is relatively closely coupled to the secondary coil designed for high Q performance and self resonant to the 1/4 wave of the oscillator frequency. The voltage distribution is now that of a quarter section with a current node at these base and voltage node at the top. Input power to the coil is raw unrectified AC at 3000 volts rms with a current of 0.5 amps. Peak voltage is over 4000 volts and is supplied by a conventional plate transformer being fed by a voltage adjustable variac for power output control. We also have built coils using 304TH, 450TH and parallel 2500TH's with a full 5000 watts of plate dissipation. This coil produced spectacular hot flaming arcs up to 8 feet with 8 kw input. A pulse signal is also shown that controls the grid of the tube allowing a wide range of spark texture variation by changing the duty cycle and frequency. For those building this from scratch, the circuit of the vacuum tube device is a high powered Hartley radio frequency oscillator tuned to the resonant frequency of the secondary coil. The circuit uses a medium powered 833A triode transmitting tube that inherently has a high grid to plate capacitance and is readily available. The plate section of the coil is wound with 1/4 inch copper tubing. The grid feed back coil is wound with #16 litz wire. The secondary is wound with #24 litz wire on a properly prepped plastic form. We can custom build vacuum tube or transistorized Tesla coils up to 5 kw. These can be modulated to sounds, music, etc. and are great for museums or just as a spectacular high tech gadget. This is a spark driven Tesla coil generating highly visual and audible sparks into open air without a return contact. The unit operates from a standard 3-wire 115vac wall outlet requiring less than two amps. The transformer is current limited to 20 ma being well below the lethal value of 50 ma. The tesla coil is easily tabletop operable and is a two-level assembly consisting of a top and bottom section. The top supports the vertical mounted secondary output coil and the flat Archimedean spiraled primary along with tunable clip lead. The bottom supports the transformer, capacitor and spark gap assembly attached by machine screws and nuts. A metal control panel is connected to earth ground along with the secondary return minimizing any dangerous shock hazards. The spark gap uses two pure tungsten electrodes rarely requiring cleaning or dressing. Hardware is all brass where required, with the primary coil being a hybrid between copper tubing and a heavy insulated wire. The kit version contains a pre-wound and fully prepped secondary coil and all parts to complete the unit, including an 8 x 2" toroidal terminal which greatly adds to the performance and overall appearance of the completed system. Hazards: 115vac line powered, requiring caution in assembling and testing. The output of the transformer (not the coil) can give a very painful shock and burn but is not considered lethal as short circuit current is only 20 ma. The output spark from the Tesla coil secondary can be painlessly contacted by firmly holding a metal object and drawing the spark to it. The Tesla coil must not be operated in a flammable atmosphere or near sensitive electronic equipment. Assembly: Mostly mechanical assembly with some soldering. Applications: Use as a science project, special effects prop, and for electrical research of high frequency electricity.

This value is above the lethal value of 50 ma and we cannot stress the importance to use caution when testing and adjusting! This Tesla coil can be operated on a tabletop. It is built as a two-level assembly consisting of a top and bottom section. The top supports the vertical mounted secondary output coil and the flat Archimedean spiraled primary along with a tunable clip lead. The bottom supports the transformers, capacitor and spark gap assembly attached by machine screws and nuts. A metal control panel is connected to earth ground along with the secondary output coil return, reducing line voltage shock hazards. The spark gap is air cooled with a high output muffin fan and uses three pure tungsten electrodes rarely requiring cleaning or dressing. Hardware is all brass where required with the primary coil being all copper tubing. The kit contains a pre-wound and fully prepared secondary coil and all parts to complete the unit, including a 12 x 3 inch toroidal terminal which greatly adds to the performance and overall appearance of the completed system. The output of the transformers can give a very painful shock and burn with possible electrocution as the short-circuit current is 60 ma. The output spark from the secondary can be contacted with a moderate shock by firmly holding a metal object and drawing the spark to it (not advisable for the inexperienced).
