Pure tungsten is preferred for electrode use as it does not oxidize or require cleaning. Its intrinsic low resistance allows the electrodes to run cooler. Tool steel will perform reasonably well for Tesla coils but will run hotter and consequently not quench the spark as well as tungsten.

Triggered Air Gap

As used in our high powered pulser HEP90. SingIe event triggered switch will handle up to 3,000 joules at 3 to 10 kv stand off voltage. Excellent for small rail guns, coil guns, plasma guns, can and object crushing, wire exploding, plasma propulsion, magnetizing etc.. Device uses 2 x 3/8" pieces of finished pure tungsten electrodes capable of many shots before cleaning. Includes our HEP9 plans.
