Batteries High Energy and Chargers

These batteries will power electronic devices when portability is needed, such as some of our HV power supplies, ozone generators, lasers, or handheld tools, toys, computers (with the help of inverters) and associated equipment, etc.

Years ago, alkaline batteries replaced the old carbon zinc batteries and improved the energy storage by a factor of 3 to 5 times, and had a longer shelf life. Modern lithium-ion batteries have up to 50% more energy storage capability than alkalines, and can be recharged up to 1000 times. These two factors make lithium-ion batteries a great candidate for projects that require a lot of power on demand, more storage capability and of course the ability to be recharged makes up for the extra initial cost.

A note on battery chargers: these chargers are specifically for charging batteries. If they are used as a power supply, there is a good chance that they will severely damage the device being powered. This is because battery chargers need to have a higher voltage than the battery they are charging, which is required to start the charging action (12V battery chargers can often exceed 16V, for example). So do not use chargers for power supplies as you may damage or destroy your electronics.

Rechargeable Sealed Lead-Acid (SLA) Batteries

Lead-acid batteries are one of the oldest types still in use today. This battery is still largely used with any type of engine that requires mechanical pre-starting. Some of the interesting properties of this battery is that the available current is very high, being well into hundreds of amps for a typical automobile. The short circuit current out of the lead acid battery can be so high that without some external control the battery will blow up. This type of battery was even considered in the early days of railguns as being a possible source of pulse power because of this high current property.

Note: NEVER use battery chargers to power electronic devices. A "12V battery charger" can output up to 20 actual volts. This extra voltage enables it to charge a 12V battery, but the same extra voltage can burn out your 12V electronics. So either use the correct 12V power supply or a 12V battery, but never power your electronic devices with battery chargers.

Rechargeable 9V Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) Batteries
