Power Supplies - High Voltage DC

Our laboratory assembled high voltage DC supplies are available as current sources with a defined short circuit current or as a voltage source with a defined voltage at the rated operating current.

The advantages of the current source are realized in the charging of capacitors used for high-energy storage single event discharges intended for rail guns and other electro kinetic and EMP devices. Even at the time the charging cycle starts the current is controlled and remains relatively constant through the charging cycle. The source can also be short circuited where the current is still in a controlled mode. The charge voltage (vt)= f(t) x I all divided by C. This is a linear relationship and does not require the power wasting series resistance used for voltage sources. The disadvantage is that there is a tendency for the voltage to soar above the design ratings. Operation requires preventative measures such as monitoring the charge voltage or an electronic trigger that shuts the sources off when the desired charging voltage is reached.

The advantage of the voltage source approach is the property of maintaining a constant voltage value within the design limits required as current (load) is being drawn. This is an advantage for electric- field charging when used for accelerators, ion beams, isotope enrichment, particle beams, potential generators etc. The disadvantage is that current is not controlled and overloads can damage the circuitry. Charging capacitors now require a power robbing series resistance to control the current. Charging is exponential. Our HVOLTV high power series utilize a bit of both worlds being voltage and current sources by user selection.

Capacitor chargers can also be used as power supplies.

Programmable capacitor chargers allow you to dial in the charging voltage and view the event via a front panel analog meter. Capacitors charge from a current source and waste little energy such as that when using a ballast resistor. Ballasted energy is all reactive and never is consumed as real power.

A selector switch is included allowing charge cycle to cease once the preprogrammed value is reached. It can be selected to automatically recycle the charging function keeping the capacitor up to voltage until the charger is turned off or the event occurs.

The charging time can be estimated by calculating the energy in joules of the capacitor being charged and dividing by joules (watt-sec) of the charger. This is only approximate as it assumes linear power being applied throughout the charge cycle.

A charge current control allows adjustment of charging time and is very useful when using smaller capacitance values.

You can more accurately approximate the charging time of your capacitors by using the simple formula t=cv/i, where t = sec, c = capacity in farads, v = voltage, and i = charging current in amps.

Excellent to use for capacitor integrity testing or just as a charger for laboratory functions and experiments.

Continuous 2000 volt 10ma output in a cylindrical enclosure. Input and output have wire leads for easy connecting. Use as a continuous source of high voltage for many applications from charging capacitors to discourage animal pests from invading and raiding garbage cans, bird feeders, gardens and other sensitive areas. Low Power Input, High Voltage Ceramic Capacitor Charger and Test Jig

These low powered devices may be used for battery or solar applications. They are short circuit proof and suitable for capacitor charging without a current limiting resistor. They may also be used as low power high voltage power supplies.

Small lightweight unit measuring 5-½ x 2-¼ x 1-½” converts 12 vdc to over 30kv dc for charging capacitors or just supplying a potential. Can be used with 8 AA alkaline batteries that can produce >90,000 Joules (!), or just use our #12DC/.5 wall adapter for 115 vac operation. The charge rate is about 0.25 joule/sec. Higher voltage units available on request.

This device is best-suited for use with our ceramic capacitors or similar (taking care to not overcharge the smaller capacitors). For charging our photo flash and electrolytic capacitors (or similar), the CHARGE800V is better suited.

An external voltmeter is required to monitor charge. Small value capacitors must be charged by merely tapping the charge push button, as voltage value can be easily and quickly exceeded.

Electrolytic Capacitor Charger

Handy electronic circuit charges up electrolytic capacitors from 100 to 800 volts. Recommended capacities are between 100 to 5,000 mfd. This equates out to over 3000 joules! (Note that the kinetic energy of a .30-06 is 750 joules.) Units are manually voltage controlled by an internal adjustment that presets a charge indicator lamp when the required voltage is reached. This feature helps prevents over charging and potentially dangerous explosions. Charging is current controlled by our unique circuitry. Automatic Programmable Charger

High power electronic circuit charges up capacitors from 200 to 10000 volts at recommended capacities from .01 mfd and upwards. Example: Charging a 1000 mfd capacitor to 5000 volts equates out to over 12,500 joules!

Units are voltage programmable by the setting of the charge voltage control on the front panel. A meter monitors the charging voltage as it builds up to the preset value and then stops. A push button starts the charging event. A second push button aborts the charging function.

   
Instructions

A charge rate control allows adjustment of charging current/charging time and is especially useful when charging smaller capacitance values.

A selector switch allows manual or automatic charging. Manual charging is where charging ceases once the preset value is reached and operator must keep pushing the charging button to maintain the preset voltage. Automatic charging keeps the capacitor indefinitely at the preset value. Capacitors automatically charge to and maintain this voltage until discharged.

A safety lamp displays any charge over 70 volts that remains on the capacitors.

Charging is lossless and does not use a resistor for current control. It is controlled by our unique circuitry with voltage indicated by a large analog panel meter.

Input power can be either 115/230 vac power. Charging rate is > 200 to 400 watt-sec (joule)/sec. Size is 10.5 x 7 x 3.75" Connections are made via banana jacks and cables as shown.

At last an affordable virtually indestructible source of high voltage for the hobbyist and professional. Circuit produces 25 kV open circuit with a short circuit current of less than 5 ma, providing a reasonably save high voltage source. Load line is set favorable to ion emitting devices. Operation is from any 12 volt 1 amp dc regulated wall adapter, battery or converter (a 12V regulated wall adapter is included which runs off standard 115VAC wall power, and automatically converts to 230VAC for overseas customers). Dimensions are 4.5" L x 4" H (5.5" at top of resister) x 1.5" W.

This device is best-suited for use with our ceramic capacitors or similar (taking care to not overcharge the smaller capacitors). For charging our photo flash and electrolytic capacitors (or similar), the CHARGE800V is better suited.

An external voltmeter is required to monitor charge. Small value capacitors must be charged by quickly applying power as voltage value can be easily exceeded.

Device is basically a two part system consisting of a UL approved high voltage high frequency power supply connected into our five stage open multiplier allowing tap downs in 5 kV increments. This product would cost many times more than our asking price and is available in volume or individual purchases.

Radiant Energy Probe and E-Field Detector

Probe detects E fields produced by electrical activity and other unknown anomalies. Unit uses no batteries or other sources of power. Unit can also provide a three dimensional output "footprint" of medical healing machines such as LAKHOVSKY coils, High voltage generators, Ion machines, Dangerous lightning levels, Power line E field gradients, High frequency radiation from TESLA coils and similar devices. HV50PROBE: Measures either positive or negative DC voltages up to 50KV. Input impedance of 1000 megohm draws only 50 µa from circuit at 50 kv (50,000 ohms/volt). Removable 2” brass corona sphere reduces leakage for those sensitive measurements. Probe is approximately 2 feet in length.

HV250PROBE: Like the HV50PROBE but at 250KV, with a 4" sphere, and 4.5 feet in length.
