The advantages of the current source are realized in the charging of capacitors used for high-energy storage single event discharges intended for rail guns and other electro kinetic and EMP devices. Even at the time the charging cycle starts the current is controlled and remains relatively constant through the charging cycle. The source can also be short circuited where the current is still in a controlled mode. The charge voltage (vt)= f(t) x I all divided by C. This is a linear relationship and does not require the power wasting series resistance used for voltage sources. The disadvantage is that there is a tendency for the voltage to soar above the design ratings. Operation requires preventative measures such as monitoring the charge voltage or an electronic trigger that shuts the sources off when the desired charging voltage is reached.

The advantage of the voltage source approach is the property of maintaining a constant voltage value within the design limits required as current (load) is being drawn. This is an advantage for electric- field charging when used for accelerators, ion beams, isotope enrichment, particle beams, potential generators etc. The disadvantage is that current is not controlled and overloads can damage the circuitry. Charging capacitors now require a power robbing series resistance to control the current. Charging is exponential. Our HVOLTV high power series utilize a bit of both worlds being voltage and current sources by user selection.

Laboratory assembled high voltage DC supplies are available as current sources with a defined short circuit current or as a voltage source with a defined voltage at the rated operating current.

Capacitor chargers can also be used as current power supplies, but they are not that functional as voltage sources.

Power control by duty cycle control is accomplished while maintaining a constant voltage across the load. The voltage waveform is now chopped up into square wave sections with a ratio of on to off times. Simple integration determines the current amount while allowing full value voltage pulses hitting the load at reduced time.

High power electronic circuit charges up capacitors from 200 to 10000 volts at recommended capacities from 1 ufd and upwards. Example: Charging a 1000 ufd capacitor to 5000 volts equates out to over 12,500 joules!

FEATURES:

  • Units are voltage programmable by the charge voltage control on the front panel.
  • A charge rate control allows adjustment of charging current/charging time and is especially useful when charging smaller capacitance values (new feature soon to be added or may be reqeusted when purchased).
  • A meter monitors the charge voltage as it builds to the preset value and then stops.
  • A push button starts the charging; a second push button aborts the charging.
  • A selector switch allows manual or automatic charging. Manual charging is where charging ceases once the preset value is reached, and operator must push the charge button to maintain the preset voltage. Automatic charging keeps the capacitor indefinitely at the preset value; capacitors automatically charge to and maintain this voltage until discharged, and the cycle repeats (pushing the "stop" button will end the automatic charging).
  • A safety lamp displays any charge over 70 volts that remains on the capacitors.
  • Charging is lossless and does not use a resistor for current control. It is controlled by our unique circuitry.
  • Input power can be either 115/230 VAC power. Charging rate is > 200 to 400 watt-sec.

High Voltage Low Capacitance Charger and Voltage Integrity Tester
Very useful combination circuit not only charges high-voltage low capacitance values often found in ceramics, door knobs and other high-voltage low capacity pieces. Circuit also is very useful for testing system for verifying standoff voltage ratings. These type of capacitors are often used in multipliers or systems that may be potted. Verifies these capacitors preventing costly repairs should one fail.

HV350SAFE Instructions

Generates 5-35kv of high voltage with a minimal shock hazard. Output is through a high voltage high meg resistor, limiting current to 200 uamps.

This particular circuit can be utilized as both a current source and a voltage source. It is only useful for charging small energy high-voltage capacitors such as ceramic discs, doorknob capacitors and devices types within the ranges of picofarads to a maximum of .05 µF. The voltage ranges can be 5000 up to almost 40,000. A capacitor such as a .05u at 40,000 V will take approximately 10 to 15 sec to charge. We don't recommend going any higher in capacity than .05 µF as this would be 40 joules and can be lethal under the right circumstances.

You can use your own ingenuity in making a test stand to check the integrity of capacitors that you intend to use in a voltage multiplier or similar circuit. We use two parallel pieces of aluminum with little notches cut and these are mounted on insulating pillars and the capacitors to test is spread eagled between the two of them and then tested. You can use this type jig to do multiple capacitors and allow them to stay on for a considerable amount of time to see if the capacitors will hold up to the specs that you require. But remember when those capacitors are connected in parallel the energy goes up as by the amount of each capacitor added so it doesn't take much to get up to a dangerous value of energy storage.

Small, lightweight unit is powered by a 12VDC 4A 3-wire wall adapter (included) that runs off standard 115VAC power (automatically converts to 230VAC for overseas customers), or 12V batteries for field use (not included, but a 2.5mm plug with wire leads is included should you want to run the power supply from a 12VDC battery). Low Power Input, High Voltage Ceramic Capacitor Charger and Test Jig

These low powered devices may be used for battery or solar applications. They are short circuit proof and suitable for capacitor charging without a current limiting resistor. They may also be used as low power high voltage power supplies.

Small lightweight unit measuring 5-½ x 2-¼ x 1-½” converts 12 vdc to over 30kv dc for charging capacitors or just supplying a potential. Can be used with 8 AA alkaline batteries that can produce >90,000 Joules (!), or just use our #12DC/.5 wall adapter for 115 vac operation. The charge rate is about 0.25 joule/sec. This device is best-suited for use with our ceramic capacitors or similar (taking care to not overcharge the smaller capacitors). For charging our photo flash and electrolytic capacitors (or similar), the CHARGE800V is better suited.

An external voltmeter is required to monitor charge. Small value capacitors must be charged by merely tapping the charge push button, as voltage value can be easily and quickly exceeded.

Manual Electrolytic & Photoflash Capacitor Charger and Tester
Generates up to 800 volts at 30ma. Requires a volt meter to monitor the voltage as it builds up on the charging capacitor to its rated value and alerts user to end the charging cycle. Unit is used to charge or to verify voltage rating of the part. This testing helps to prevent circuit damage if using a bank of capacitors in a parallel or series combination such as for lasers, electro kinetic, and other projects.

Electrolytic Capacitor Charger

Handy electronic circuit charges up electrolytic capacitors from 100 to 800 volts. Recommended capacities are between 100 to 5,000 ufd. This equates out to over 3000 joules! (Note that the kinetic energy of a .30-06 is 750 joules.)

User connects capacitor and holds charge button until his own external meter shows the required voltage. The internal adjustment is then set for the indicator lamp. (Note that this setting would only be good for one value of voltage. For other values the lamp must be recalibrated again.)

This feature is helpful when testing parts with identical voltage ratings and helps to prevent over charging and potentially dangerous explosions.

Charging is current controlled by our unique circuitry. Input power is 12V DC, either with the included 12V wall adapter, or from a 12V battery such as C or D cells in a cradle. Charging rate is over 25 (watt-sec) joules. Size is 5 x 4 x 2”

Probe detects E fields produced by electrical activity and other unknown anomalies. Unit uses no batteries or other sources of power. Unit can also provide a three dimensional output "footprint" of medical healing machines such as LAKHOVSKY coils, High voltage generators, Ion machines, Dangerous lightning levels, Power line E field gradients, High frequency radiation from TESLA coils and similar devices. ALL NEW IOD40 detects both positive and negative electric fields produced by ions, ultra low static fields, lightning, paranormal entities and other associated phenomona by using a special low leakage switch.

This very versatile tool detects both positive and negative electric fields produced by ions, and ultra low static fields This unit is sensitive enough to detect the minute charge produced by just rubbing a piece of plastic and bringing the probe in proximity. It easily measures the electric field during a thunder storm or other high static conditions long before the storm arrives.

Extremely useful for mapping the electric fields associated with high voltage generators. Indicates dangerous "E" fields that may damage sensitive electronic circuits or components. Detects those that can be dangerous to personnel. Detects the presence of weak to strong static charges from lightning, potential corona points and output of ion generators, leaking high voltage insulators and wiring insulation. A very valuable device for the high voltage researcher and experimenter.
