Our laboratory assembled high voltage DC supplies are available as current sources with a defined short circuit current or as a voltage source with a defined voltage at the rated operating current.

The advantages of the current source are realized in the charging of capacitors used for high-energy storage single event discharges intended for rail guns and other electro kinetic and EMP devices. Even at the time the charging cycle starts the current is controlled and remains relatively constant through the charging cycle. The source can also be short circuited where the current is still in a controlled mode. The charge voltage (vt)= f(t) x I all divided by C. This is a linear relationship and does not require the power wasting series resistance used for voltage sources. The disadvantage is that there is a tendency for the voltage to soar above the design ratings. Operation requires preventative measures such as monitoring the charge voltage or an electronic trigger that shuts the sources off when the desired charging voltage is reached.

The advantage of the voltage source approach is the property of maintaining a constant voltage value within the design limits required as current (load) is being drawn. This is an advantage for electric- field charging when used for accelerators, ion beams, isotope enrichment , particle beams, potential generators etc. The disadvantage is that current is not controlled and overloads can damage the circuitry. Charging capacitors now require a power robbing series resistance to control the current. Charging is exponential. Our HVOLTV high power series utilize a bit of both worlds being voltage and current sources by user selection.

Universal trigger device generates up to 0.5 Joules to an external trigger or pulse transformer. Built in selector switch allows repetitive triggering at an adjustable repetition rate or single manual triggering via a push button switch or a jack for precision external single event triggering. Circuit is powered by a 12 volt wall adapter. Includes a 25 kv trigger transformer for basic applications. Utility unit measures 3-3/4 x 5-1/2 x 2-1/4" and weighs less than 1 pound.

Useful laboratory device intended to pulse drive ignition transformers, CDI coils obtaining pulsed high voltage, high peak current discharges. Capacitor discharge circuitry has adjustable charging voltage pulse discharge rate. An auxiliary input jack is provided for external or synchronized triggering. This driver will produce up to 4 to 5 inch sparks from a good quality automotive ignition coil! Includes a built in 20,000 volt output pulse coil for testing.

HV Trigger and Ignitor

Produces a 20,000 volt 1" open-air spark discharge. On board switch allows selection of a high or low energy setting of 180 and 5 millijoules of spark output energy respectively. Repetition rate is 3 or 30 pulses per second. Input and output have wire leads for easy connecting. Intended for triggering spark gap switches for high-speed coulomb energy transfer, igniting flammable gases and atmospheres. Operates from internal, external batteries or 115-vac wall adapter transformer. Ground referenced output circuit provides convenient interfacing to most three terminal devices. Assembly is 7 x 1 ½" board level construction. Kit is an easy to assemble kit with printed circuit board. Ready to use is board level assembly with connecting leads.

Small 1 x 4½" efficient battery powered high voltage source of DC power is capable of producing 10-20 KV from a small, standard 9 volt battery.

It is built on a PCB or a small piece of perforated circuit board and can easily be housed or enclosed as the application requires.

Applications range from powering image converter tubes for night vision devices to ignition circuits for flame throwing or producing units, capacitor charging for energy storage, shocking, insect eradication, Kirlian photography, hover craft, ion propulsion electric field generators, ozone production, etc., etc., etc.
